Quit Resources provides access to three interventions – Mindfulness Training for Smokers, Sit to Quit and Sure Quit Brief. The interventions have been tested and found to be effective in NIH funded trials.

  • Mindfulness Training for Smokers is a 7-week quit smoking group program. It is highly effective and uses 20 short videos, a 111-page manual, audio recording and is led by a certified MTS instructor.
  • Sit to Quit is a 2-week quit smoking program with 3 videos, a 25-page workbook, audio recordings and phone support.
  • Sure Quit Brief is 1-week self-guided quit smoking program with 1 video and a 17-page workbook.

This website contains the core materials used in each of these interventions.  This site is non-commercial and is used to provide access to these interventions for clinicians, researchers, and educators.  Nothing can be purchased from this site. Institutions such as universities or medical centers may use these materials at no cost.  To use the materials, please sign up for use under the Program Sign Up page.  We will contact you to provide details of use.  When using the materials, we may ask you to provide some minimal outcomes data such as course enrollment and completion.

Course Descriptions

Mindfulness Training for Smokers

This highly effective 7-week quit smoking intervention provides 24 hours of treatment (7 weeks of group meetings, and a quit day retreat). It combines medications, skills training, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness training. Course materials include 20 short videos, a 111-page manual, two audio recordings, and close supervision and guidance by a certified MTS instructor.  The intervention was designed to treat smokers with high-level dependence, high-level stress, anxiety, or who have had multiple relapses in the past.  If you are a smoker who has tried to quit numerous times in the past, this intervention was made for you.

The Mindfulness Training for Smokers video series contains 7 video classes that will teach you mindfulness skills and how to use mindfulness skills to quit smoking and stay quit for good. The videos are shown during class, but also may be watched at home. Here is an an outline of course topics:

Class 1: Mindfulness, Raisin Exercise, Sitting for Meditation

Class 2: Mindful Smoking, Moment of Mindfulness, Smoking Triggers

Class 3: Smoking Addiction, Mindfulness of Urges, Thoughts, Mindful Walking

Class 4: Emotions and Alcohol, Withdrawal Symptoms, Mindfulness of Pain, Medications

Class 5: Class review, Strategies to Help You Quit, Preparing for the Quit Day.

Quit Day: Instruction in how to conduct a quit day.

The Mindfulness Training for Smokers Manual is 111 pages with illustrations and exercises. It is designed to complement to the video series – each class covers the same topics as the video, but provides additional instruction for participants who want to understand more.
Mindfulness Training for Smokers provides two Audio Recordings – 15 and 30 minutes in length with guided Meditation practices designed to help you manage specific common challenges related to quitting.

Sit to Quit

This very effective 2-week quit smoking intervention was designed for people who are unable to attend the Mindfulness Training for Smokers 7-week group intervention, but still want to have access to the practices that have been found to be so effective. The intervention provides three short videos (20-30 minutes each) that may be watched at home, a 25-page workbook, and two audio recordings and supervision by a phone counselor certified to teach Sit to Quit.  The intervention was designed to treat smokers with high-level stress or anxiety or who have had or multiple relapses in the past.  If you are a smoker who has tried to quit numerous times in the past, and cannot attend the 7-week MTS intervention, this intervention was made for you.

The Sit to Quit video series includes 3 video classes that will teach you about mindfulness and how to use mindfulness to quit smoking. The videos are designed to be played at home with phone coaching from a course instructor.   The video series includes the following:

Class 1: Mindfulness, Tobacco Addiction, Mindful Smoking, Meditation.

Class 2: Mindful Walking, Smoking Triggers, Urges, Addictive Thoughts.

Class 3: Five Principles for Quitting, Medications, The Quit day.

The Sit to Quit workbook is 25 pages and has 3 chapters.  It follows the same format as Sure Quit video series, but offers additional information for those who want to find out more.  An overview of practices and concepts taught in the workbook includes:

Class 1: Mindfulness, Tobacco Addiction, Mindful Smoking, Meditation.

Class 2: Mindful Walking, Smoking Triggers, Urges, Addictive Thoughts.

Class 3: Five Principles for Quitting, Medications, The Quit day.

Sure Quit Brief

This effective 1-week self-guided quit smoking intervention was developed for smokers who feel that they are able to follow instructions for a self-guided quit program without assistance.  It can also be used by those who would like mindfulness training for smoking cessation provided in the more intensive interventions but are unable to participated in these interventions.  The intervention includes a single 30-minute video and a 17-page workbook.

Sure Quit Brief includes a 30-minute video that will help guide you prepare for your quit attempt. Practices and concepts taught in the video include: Tobacco Addiction, Mindful Smoking, Five Principles for Quitting and Preparing for The Quit Day.
The workbook is 17 pages and is designed to complement the video and includes: Tobacco Addiction, Mindful Smoking, Five Principles for Quitting and Preparation for The Quit Day.
